Leipoldt’s is a small restaurant, coffee house & catering business serving traditional South African food in the heart of Brooklyn, Pretoria. In an age where standardised franchised fare has become the norm we are trying to be the exception. All our food is made from fresh ingredients in our own kitchens. You are guaranteed of freshly prepared, wholesome meals with the best available local ingredients, herbs and vegetables.
Under new management, Leipolt's is focusing on a small menu, offering light breakfast and lunch meals, pies, quiches and traditional South African dishes. And if you are too busy to sit down with a fresh cup of coffee and sample one of our homemade cakes and treats!
C Louis Leipoldt (1880 - 1947) was a quintessential Renaissance man - poet, winelover and gourmet, botanist and medical doctor. He wrote 3 delightful cookbooks on South African cuisine - recording our culinary heritage and leaving a lasting legacy of the art of cooking tasty, slow-cooked food.
Food and wine were Leipoldt’s abiding passions, but he approached cooking with the authority of a medical doctor and knowledge of a botanist. Experimenting with herbs in food became an avid interest. He remains our inspiration for wholesome, hearty meals, using fresh local ingredients, spices and aromatic flavouring!
"International cuisine is rediscovering the joys of slow cooking," says restaurant owner Flip Kruger. "We accept that wines and even beer need time to achieve the ideal blending of flavours. We believe that you just can't rush the cooking process.
"However in these days of long working hours and limited family time, not everyone has 6-8 hours to prepare a meal. At Leipoldt's you can get a healthy, hearty, traditional meal - either eat-in (until 4pm) or collect and take home (evenings)."
For the convenience of our local patrons, large orders are now delivered to offices in the Brooklyn area.
